Himachal Pradesh's Revenue Minister highlights Monsoon disasters, land loss, and political concerns

Himachal Pradesh's Revenue Minister, Jagat Singh Negi, revealed concerning statistics related to the ongoing monsoon season. He reported that since the monsoon began on June 24, the state has witnessed a series of rain-related disasters, resulting in significant human and property losses.

Rain-Related disasters

According to Minister Jagat Singh Negi, the monsoon's onset has led to tragic consequences in Himachal Pradesh. As of now, approximately 400 people have lost their lives, and more than 400 individuals have sustained injuries due to rain-related incidents. The impact on housing has been particularly severe, with over 2500 houses completely destroyed, and over 11,000 houses suffering partial damage.

Loss of land and legal challenges

Minister Negi also highlighted a significant issue arising from these disasters—many people have lost their land. In several areas across the state, there is no established system for land allotment. He stressed the need for legal amendments, particularly in areas where forest rights legislation is in place. The government intends to engage with the Union government to address these challenges.

Concerns about 'One Nation One Election'

Minister Jagat Singh Negi expressed skepticism regarding the proposed 'One Nation One Election' concept, which is rumored to be discussed in the special monsoon session called by the Central Government. He suggested that such discussions could be a ploy to divert attention from more pressing issues, especially with Lok Sabha elections approaching. He questioned the feasibility of this idea, noting that it would take several months to complete the election process and would entail significant financial expenses.
